I volunteered on the archaeological excavation supervised by Yigael Yadin in 1965, then enlisted in Nahal. Masada remains a treasured memory for me.

I climbed Masada at sunrise in the 1980s, with other kibbutz volunteers. This was a time when young people from all over the world were volunteering at kibbutzim, many of them not Jewish, in order to travel, experience life a socialist collective, and meet people from different cultures. I made friends from the UK, Canada, Australia, France, Switzerland, Germany, and South America, to name a few, most not Jewish, but all of them loving Israel. This was before the current rabid antisemitic poison took root through the West. Watching the sun rise over Masada was one of the happiest, most spiritual experiences I ever had. It reminded me that the Israel is here to stay.
